Pixel Lab is about how simple rules can produce complex behaviour. Every time the viewer changes is a new 'cycle' or 'frame'. If a pixel is black in this frame, the BIRTH RULES tell you whether it will be coloured-in in the next frame. If a pixel is coloured-in in this frame, the SURVIVAL RULES tell you whether it will be coloured-in in the next frame. There are many ways to investigate Pixel Lab, but I suggest:
Move the 'SPEED' slider to the maximum level, and click the blue button on the 'INTERESTING RULES' controller. Or, you can select different combinations of survival and birth rules. These rules will change while the sim is running. You can also change the colours by clicking on the coloured tabs at the bottom left of the page.
